Characteristics of the Ile de france sheep breed

One of the major meat breeds, the Ile de France sheep is an animal with very high performances which has demonstrated its ability to adapt to all breeding systems and to regions with extremely varied climates.

This breed was developed in the Ile de France region around Paris, a region charged with history, but also an agricultural region, with crops and pasture, grassland sheep and housed sheep. It was a professor at the Veterinary School of Maisons-Alfort who, at the beginning of the 19th century, had the idea of crossing a Merino bloodline, reared mainly for its wool, with Dishley stock, a meat breed of English origin. In 50 years this cross-breeding resulted in a stable breed whose original improvement was due exclusively to empirical means of selection on type.  It was after 1960 that breeders made the choice of adopting the modern tools of quantitative genetics to improve their collective selection structure.

Today, the Ile de France breed is based on a very complete, rigorous genetic programme, adapted to the requirements of distribution and the consumer.

Among the meat breeds, it is the only one to use the three levels of selection :

  • Individual testing of dams and lambs of the year
  • Selection on the genetic qualities of the animal's ancestry
  • Testing on progeny

For continuous improvement of :

  • The maternal qualities
  • The meat qualities

The Ile de France is one of the best breeds for meat conformation. Because of its conformation and speed of growth, it is widely used in industrial crossing with hardy breeds to supply the sheep meat industry. Meanwhile, its breed selection programme continues to improve its maternal qualities. In prolificacy and dairy value, the Ile de France is among the leaders of the meat breeds. The Ile de France ewe feeds its lambs naturally without any problems.

The Ile de France sheep performs equally well in year-round housed systems, semi outdoors, year-round outdoors, or rangeland transhumant systems. This breed is very easy to feed. For a meat breed, it makes excellent use of cheap forage such as straw for example, which is the only rough forage to be had on a good number of farms, as well as the by-products from arable crops.

Ile de France ewes have the particular feature and the advantage of having a sexual cycle in periods of increasing day lengths, unlike most meat breeds. This specific characteristic makes the work organisation much more flexible, and work peak periods can be spread out more easily. In an arable crop region, in particular, autumn lambing makes it possible to programme births during the periods when work in the fields has ceased. For others, distributing lambings over time is a way of using buildings and forage areas to the best advantage.
